Foods to add to your diet this spring and summer

With the bleak, cold winter finally behind us and warmer weather upon us, we can start getting excited for the host of tasty, colourful fruit and vegetables waiting to be dished up in delicious meals and recipes. Not only is buying seasonal food good for your bank account - and the environment - they are also packed full of nutrients, ready to make you feel your best this spring and summer.

Strawberries

Sweet and delicious, strawberries really thrive in the UK between the months of June and September. Packed full of vitamin C, manganese, folate and potassium and many antioxidants, these are the perfect addition to many meals. Add them to your summer salads for a sweet addition or, for a traditional English dessert, why not enjoy the deliciousness of strawberries and cream.

Blackberries

Blackberries are a British summer staple, not only are they delicious, but they are also fun to find and pick. Grab a container and why not head out into the countryside and find some delicious blackberries in the brambles around you. They are best picked ripe, so June is the best time to head out. Once you’ve picked your blackberries enjoy them with granola and yoghurt, or why not have a go at making your own blackberry jam or even try and make a nice blackberry crumble. Or even add them to a lovely cold G&T!

Runner Beans

Blanch them, sauté them or steam them, runner beans are the perfect addition to any evening meal, especially with a traditional English roast. They contain many essential vitamins, including folate, vitamin C and vitamin A. Why not have a go at growing your own, sow runner beans indoors in pots in mid-spring, or once the last frost has gone, you can sow directly into the ground outdoors and they will be ready to eat when the pods are between 15-20cm (6-8in) long.

Elderflower

Elderflowers are a staple taste of summer. You will find elderflowers dotted all over the British countryside until the end of June, why not head out and harvest your own. Perfect for making cordial for cocktails or mocktails, sparkling wines, or you could make your own ice lollies using the cordial, or your own elderflower ice cubes to keep your drinks cool this spring and summer.

Salad Leaves

Spring and summer are the perfect time to enjoy salad leaves, whether you're a lover of baby spinach or romaine lettuce, they are the perfect addition to a salad or many other dishes. Pick up your favourites from your local supermarket, farmers’ market or you can easily grow some in your own garden.
