International Men's Day: Finding Friendship and Community in Later Life

Alan and Geoff at Austin Heath

In October 2023, two men from opposite corners of the UK—Alan Wilson, 96, from Selby, Yorkshire, and Geoff Burton, 90, from Scotland—both made the decision to move to Austin Heath Retirement Village in Warwickshire. They arrived on the same day and settled into neighbouring one-bedroom apartments in The Grange, finding not just new homes, but a new friendship that has brought fresh energy into their lives.

For many older men, transitions such as retirement, the loss of loved ones, or relocation can lead to loneliness and isolation. Alan and Geoff’s story demonstrates how the right community can offer a fresh start and help combat these challenges.

Alan had been struggling with declining mobility and the upkeep of a large house. “My home was becoming unmanageable, and I knew something had to change,” he says. After a short stay in a nursing home that didn’t suit him, Alan and his family began searching for a place that would offer both independence and a sense of community.

Geoff, who had spent most of his life in Scotland, was also feeling the effects of living far from his family. He wanted to be closer to his son and grandchildren, and after much thought, he decided to make the move to Austin Heath.

“I was missing the connection with my family, and I wanted to be part of a community again,” Geoff says.

Alan and Geoff’s paths crossed early on when Victoria, the office manager, introduced them over a coffee. Both men had backgrounds in engineering, and they instantly hit it off. “We’ve been having coffee together ever since,” Geoff says. Their shared interests and common career background helped foster a fast friendship.

“Everyone’s friendly,” Geoff says. “We were made to feel part of the group from day one.” The two became regulars at various village activities, enjoying the social aspects of their new life at Austin Heath. They attend singalongs, film nights, and quiz evenings, where they’ve always felt welcome. “It’s nice to have someone around to do things with,” Alan says.

Beyond their friendship, both Alan and Geoff have embraced the many activities offered at Austin Heath. Geoff enjoys cycling, walking, and playing table tennis, while Alan, who initially used a mobility scooter, has made significant improvements in his mobility since joining the gym. “The gym’s helped me a lot,” Alan says. “I’m using a walker now and feel much more mobile.”

Staying active has kept them both engaged, but it’s the combination of socialising and doing things together that has made a real difference. “There’s always something going on,” Geoff adds. “It’s never boring, and it’s great to have a friend to join in with.”

Since moving to Austin Heath, both Alan and Geoff have found that life has greatly improved. Their days are filled with a mix of activities and good company, and their friendship has added something extra to the experience. As Geoff puts it, “It’s much better when you have someone to do things with.”

For both of them, it’s not just about having a place to live—it’s about being part of something. The connection they’ve found with each other and the wider community at Austin Heath has made a real difference, and it’s a reminder that a fresh start can offer much more than just a change of address.
