Martin Berliner Receives MBE for Jewish Community Service
Recognised for Transforming Maccabi GB and Championing Jewish Community Initiatives
Martin Berliner, a resident of Great Alne Park and former CEO of Maccabi GB, has been awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in recognition of his exceptional service to the Jewish community. Martin was honoured with the MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours list and received his award from Princess Anne at an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle on 25th September 2024.
At 63, Martin’s two-decade tenure as CEO of Maccabi GB transformed the organisation from a small voluntary group into a multi-million-pound charity. Under his leadership, Maccabi GB engaged over 50,000 people annually through programmes promoting sport, health, and Jewish identity. Notable achievements include co-creating the ‘Stand Up! Education Against Discrimination’ project, reaching over 100,000 young people, and playing a pivotal role in the FA’s ‘Kick It Out’ campaign against antisemitism. He also initiated the ‘Yellow Candle Project,’ distributing 30,000 candles annually for Holocaust remembrance.
Reflecting on his award, Martin commented, “What a fantastic yet surreal experience. I am honoured to receive this recognition, which reflects not only my personal journey but also the collective efforts of many dedicated individuals within our community. It has been a privilege to contribute to Maccabi GB’s mission, and I remain committed to supporting initiatives that promote inclusivity and wellbeing.”
Adam Hall, Village Manager at Great Alne Park, commented, “We are incredibly proud to have Martin as a resident of Great Alne Park. His commitment to the Jewish community and the positive impact he has made through his work with Maccabi GB is truly inspiring. This well-deserved recognition highlights Martin’s remarkable achievements and reflects the shared values of service and community that we all cherish here at Great Alne Park.”
Since retiring, Martin continues to play an active role in the Jewish community as a consultant for Maccabi Europe, sharing his expertise to strengthen Maccabi organisations across the continent. He and his wife Judith moved to Great Alne Park in September 2024, seeking a well-deserved retirement in Warwickshire.
Managed by leading later living operator and developer, Inspired Villages, Great Alne Park is home to 172 attractive later living cottages and apartments, set within 80 acres of parkland and beautifully landscaped grounds.
