Children join residents at Gifford Lea for National Storytelling Week

In celebration of National Storytelling Week, 66 pupils from Tattenhall Park Primary School attended a storytelling event at Gifford Lea retirement community, to read some of their favourite stories to residents.

Taking place on Thursday 6th February at Inspired Villages’ Gifford Lea community, residents, book club members and relatives sat quietly as the pupils, aged between five and seven, read their favourite stories aloud. 

Amongst the participants were resident Jean Beatty, aged 90, who is a published author having written novels; ‘Different Drummers’ and ‘Stoney Beck’, both of which gained five-star reviews. 

Residents also shared with the pupils some of their favourite childhood stories, whilst they enjoyed cake and refreshments.

Research has found that time spent with younger people can have vast benefits to those in later life, from enhancing mood, encouraging physical activity and providing opportunities to learn new things. 

Age UK suggests spending time with grandchildren at least once a month, however for those living a distance away from family, or without grandchildren, initiatives like National Storytelling Week offer a perfect opportunity to interact with younger people.  

Resident Jean Beatty commented: “I had a lovely time, the children were a delight, I was so impressed with their ability to retell their favourite stories especially being so very young. I hope some do become writers.”

James Cobb, Director of Sales and Marketing at Inspired Villages, said: “It’s wonderful to see different generations bonding over their love for storytelling all while enjoying each other’s company. Amy Turner, Key Stage 1 teacher at Tattenhall Park Primary School, added: “We would like to thank Gifford Lea for extending an invitation to our school. The children and parents enjoyed sharing and listening to different traditional tales. We also enjoyed hearing a story from one of the residents who inspired a budding, young author in our school too. A great afternoon was had by all.”
